Teenz//Joseph Szabo

from Teenage
Joseph Szabo is a photographer and a teacher, known most well for his books (Almost Grown & Teenage) filled with lively photos of his high school students. He started using his students as subjects to help teach his photo class, and then began following them around and documenting their lives outside of class.

I'm curious how fun and non-creepy it was to be followed around by your high school teacher, but hey, it doesn't seem to be stopping these cool kids from having a good time!

You can find more pics on his website as well as his other series such as Hometown, which I really enjoyed. Also, apparently there's a film??

sumahhh

Here are a few pics I took while in Minnesota this summer.

There's something about the Midwest that is completely different than the west coast that I can't quite put a finger on.

I've already posted a few of these on my flickr, and will slowly be adding more. I'm still learning how to use my canon so I'm not completely in love with these but I'm having a lot of fun with it!

Mirai Chan by Kotori Kawashima

未来ちゃん #08
These photos by photographer Kotori Kawashima of his friend's daughter are absolutely mesmerizing! Each picture is filled with such vibrancy exuding from the girl, and the colors around her.

The pictures are compiled in a book called "Mirai-Chan," which seems to not be sold in the US (where I am located). Maybe one day I'll splurge on it on amazon, but for now I'll have to keep to gazing (and smiling) at the beautiful pictures on the internet.

City of Angels

I just got back from LA with my family and man, was it weird! I loved it!
sweater/blouse/whatever from nordstroms, thrifted dress, UO shoes

I wore this to explore with my mom. I actually wear this outfit a lot, with different sweaters depending on the weather. I love comfortable fashion! This photo was taken across the street from a shop called The Dogshow which was one of my favorite finds of the vacation.

It was so beautiful! All sorts of funky clothes were strewn over pastel furniture and cool trinkets lay everywhere. In the middle, like a hip, purple nucleus, a violet decorated TV resided, and the owner lounged in front of it on a similarly colored couch. 16 and Pregnant was on. These photos barely give the ethereal experience any justice.
We did many other touristy things, like going to Universal Studios, or Grauman's Chinese Theatre, which I really enjoyed, but what I liked best was walking around (which actually proved to be more difficult than one would think- seems you have to drive to find anything ) and checking out these cool places along the way.

spring favs

I'm totally in love with Giant Drag's latest album, "Waking Up is Hard to Do." I was introduced to the band by Rookie, naturally, and it's been a non stop listening fest since.
Waking Up Is Hard To Do cover art
A few favorites:
"90210"

"We Like The Weather"

"Garbage Heart"

The whole album is really sweet and pop-y but also snarly and moan-y. If that makes sense.
In other news, I'm also totally in love with my bed. Spring break 2013!!!!

dawgz

I'm so into these photos by Joe Coscarelli from the Westminster Dog Show.

I can't help but wonder if these dogs are having a good time. I wish there was a show like "Toddler's and Tiaras" about dog show dogs, but I guess animal mind-reading technology would have to be developed first for it to be really worth watching. Pageant Pups, anyone?

word jewelry//Lanvin

I loved the jewelry from Lanvin's Fall 2013 collection. There was a lot of words, which I usually don't like, but Alber Elbaz incorporated them in a way that was, shall I say, cool.

so nonchalant, just jeweled bugz hanging around her, but it's chill, she's cool. Or, it's supposed to be sarcastic, which I think is also cool.

Honestly, I hate these rhinestones and pearls, but I love that they are spelling out and surrounding words like "help" and "go." What does it mean??

This is my favorite look of the collection. It got me thinking about how we use fashion to either hide or reveal our inner thoughts. I love how the model is wearing a fraying dress that is styled with an abundance of jewelry, all around her face. This highlights her minimal makeup, save the heavy lined eyes, which is an awesome reflection of the look. The most decadent looking piece states "help" which leads me to believe this is a statement about materialism. I'm probably looking way to far into this but I love talking about fashion!! If anyone is reading this, and you have any other thoughts about this collection comment please and we can talk about it!

FOXYGEN BLOWS MY MIND

Foxygen is cool duo made up of Jonathan Rado and Sam France. The first song of theirs that I heard was "Make it Known," and let me tell you, it was swiftly made known to me that this would be my main listening material for winter break.

"Make it Known" is from their first album Take the Kids of Broadway. I heard some Rolling Stones here, some Doors there, but after a while, it became this sort of jumble (I mean this in the best way possible) of sounds that is not like anything else, except Foxygen, of course. I love how Foxygen slides across many decades of rock, which is actually something they've been getting a lot of crap about. But if we have this great history of music + the internet to access it so easily, why not draw inspiration from it?

This song is from their most recent album, We are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic.  I love how it starts with this delicate, elementary sounding intro, and then takes a brisk turn to these dreamy vocals, and then somehow your back at the same place, except different. "San Francisco" exhibits one of my favorite aspects of Foxygen's music: it takes you on a journey of sorts.
P.S
Can we talk about their name?? How genius is it?

shoes

I recently happened upon the website of photographer Steve McCurry, known most well for "Afghan Girl", a portrait of a young woman in a Pakistani refugee camp. I browsed through many of his galleries of pictures taken all over the world. My favorite gallery was a collection of his pictures that feature the shoes and feet of people he has encountered on his journeys.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
California, USA
Tokyo, Japan
Rajasthan, India
It really got me thinking about the relationship people have with shoes. Shoes are vital to everyone (in most cases, at least), but in some communities they might be a fashion statement, while in other communities, they might be a privilege. Though I'm sure I'm analyzing this too far, it's interesting looking at shoes to get a sense (obviously one that's just skimming the surface) of a country's culture.
